Routine Vision Exams – Should I get one?

As children return to school – have you and your family had your eye exams yet?

I just had mine!

I have been wearing corrective glasses/contacts most of my life.  It wasn’t until an eye exam at school that my parents discovered I could not see.  Once I got my glasses – it was life-changing!

Vision loss compromises people’s quality of life because it reduces their capacity to read, learn, attend school, drive a car, watch television, or keep personal accounts.  Loss of impaired vision can isolate older people and keep them from friends and family.

It is important for everyone in the family – immediate and extended family – to get an eye examination.

If you are over 65, the American Optometric Association recommends annual eye exams. Yet, original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover routine eye exams or the purchase of eyeglasses and contact lenses.  Often, the lack of insurance means some people may choose not to see an eye doctor until they have a significant problem.

Truth be told, routine/preventive eye exams should be a part of everyone’s life.  It is best to catch eye conditions early and routine / preventive exams are essential to accomplishing this.
